Winter Photoshoot

Photos: December 2007

Jonas was 3 1/2 when we took these winter photos for our 2007 Christmas card. In the top left photo I think he looks really little and still a bit of a baby but then he looks so grown up in the three center photos.

As usual this layout looks not-so-good after being scanned. In person the background paper is an awesome faded black, not such a weird-o purple. And the reds are not neon like they appear to be in the scans. (Curses to the cheap scanner!)

Snowball Fight!

Love these photos of Jonas and Tony having a snowball "fight." The snow was so dry that Tony had to make the snowballs for Jonas and then brace himself for the snowball-to-the-head that followed. These photos made me realize that we never really got any snow this winter, not even enough to make a few snowballs. Although this coming week is Spring Break, so I guess there's still a chance.

Here I go again, trying to get some real scrapbooking done. This page was a little tricky because I had so many things I wanted to include on the layout. I finally decided to make a file folder (pocket) in the top left corner and put the cake photos on top of it and then tuck a little two-side "file" about the cake inside the file folder. I was able to put the actual letters from the cake on the "file". Being able to include a little memento from the day is pretty cool. There are even greasy frosting smudges on the corners of some of them. Oh, how authentic!

Some of the details I love about this layout don't show as well once it's scanned and reduced and put out on the web. I  added some "office supply" details like the file folder tabs, the notebook paper for the cake detail journaling and the paper clip. I think I might need to add some staples for some extra fanciness somewhere. Staples make everything better, right?

So this is one side of the "file" describing the cake details.

This is the other side of the "file" with the cake topper letters. I did have to remove the popsicle sticks from the bottom that I used to stick them into the cake. There just wasn't enough room for the letters and the sticks in this little file folder.

Our Family Christmas 2006

Here's a flashback to Jonas at 2 1/2. I'm usually not a big red-and-green-for-Christmas type scrapbooker but since there was red and green in the photos I decided to go for it. The colors (as usual) are much cooler looking in person. They are much more muted and subtle. And the photo of Tony with Jonas on his trike isn't so weird-orange in person. I'm beginning to loathe my cheap scanner!

I finished this digital layout today. It's not the best but I got to play around with a lot of digital scrap supplies while creating it and discovered some digital kits I forgot I had. Isn't that always the way....too many supplies, too little time.

Spring & Summer 2007

Layout: May-July 2007

I finished this layout in record time, again!! I'm rollin' now. I was inspired by another torn out magazine page (below) from my archives (read: dusty binder). It was an easy layout and I was able to use the myriad of patterned papers I had to scrap these photos. Sewing right on the page was really fun. "Where's the sewing?" you might ask. Click on the layout and it will enlarge so you can get up-close-and-personal to see all those crazy stitches. I also loved the inspiration layout because the squares were placed in a grid but an imperfect, wonky grid which gave me the freedom to slap my squares on without caring if they were perfectly straight and lined up within 1/3000th of an inch. Very liberating.

I {luv} how this layout turned out. I searched through my notebook-of-torn-out-magazine-pages and found this awesome poem and decided it was a perfect addition to these photos. I had picked out the background pages months ago and scoured through my stash of crafty goodness to find the scraps of paper and letters. I thought myself clever to scan the background paper then alter it a little, add the frame and poem and then print it out. I like how the large letters at the bottom of the page a pretty subtle against the similarly colored background. It's hard to tell in the scan, but I sanded the edges of the letters so they have a white edge that makes them stand out a bit more than they would have otherwise. Overall, it was a quick and easy page that, I think, turned out great.

These three layouts have been sitting on my desk, neglected and collecting dust for months and months now. I finally finished them up and scanned them this weekend. I'm not too excited about how the color was scanned on the "go, go, Go!" layout below. I think I've complained about this before. My scanner turns a nice rich, chocolate brown color into a weird purple-ish color. Also the orange ended up a little neon after being scanned. I decided not to put in any time fixing it in Photoshop. I figure as long as I declare that my color scheme isn't purposefully weird-purple and neon orange, I will hopefully not get my craft license revoked.

I have Wednesdays off and I usually plan to do something productive like clean the bathrooms but digital scrapbooking is always more fun. It's like knowing you should have a salad for lunch but just make a PB&J instead. {That may or may not have happened today as well.}

I did manage to get Jonas to Sports Camp this morning (more or less on time even). He goes for a couple hours every morning this week. He did a week in July, too. Jonas is liking it for the most part and learning a lot about soccer, basketball, baseball, and volleyball. They even get to do scooter board races. Below are some photos from the July session. Hopefully I can get some other photos and videos from this week to post soon.

This is one of Jonas' many attempts to shoot the basketball. Even though he does a total granny-shot it is still one of the best simply because he didn't fall down after shooting. Baby steps, right?

I'm so into this digital scrapbooking. Actually, I'm trying to justify collecting all the free digital stuff from the internet over the last month or so. I decided the best way was to do a layout of some of my all-time favorite photos of Jonas. These were taken on Easter morning last year. If you missed the original post, you can read all about it here.

I can't believe these photos were taken just over a year ago. It really doesn't seem like that long. Everyone tells me that your kids grow up so fast. I'm realizing that is so incredibly true.

Digital Layout

My new addiction, as alluded to in the previous post, is searching for free digital kits online. I have found another sweet blog that searches for freebies and posts them every day. And it's not just one or two, it's usually over 100 previews/links to free digital kits or elements. That is like an ark-load of free stuff. The blog is DigiFree. Check it out.

The layout above that I whipped up tonight doesn't have a title or journaling or any real fanciness, but I had to experiment with the postage stamp inspired frame that I found for free at MajorTiggerScraps blog. I altered the postage stamp somewhat to be able to use the three photos that I picked out. Then I searched my digital stash for a background that might be postage related. The postmark stamp at the bottom right is part of the background that I got in a 2Peas freebie kit a while back. You can download Traveling Papers digital kit here. I thought I was super-clever to do a little Photoshop magic to the postmark stamp by changing the date to reference when the photos were taken. {I had to point that out least my hard work slip by you unnoticed.}

How to Be a Lumberjack...

Here's yet another layout. I thought maybe if I do something so incredibly repetitive and annoy everyone maybe someone would at least comment on how annoying it is. ???

I love the background paper of this layout. {Distressed} meets {Office} meets {Subtle Floral}. Awesome. Besides buying the background paper, I used all salvaged supplies some of which I've have for eight years or more (snowflake stickers.) This was another layout that I worked on while my friend Melissa was over. She contributed the round "Let it Snow" rub-on in the bottom left corner. Thanks, Meliss'r!

Journaling: October 2008

I want to give a shout out to my fellow scrapbooker Melissa. Hey, I finished it!! I started this layout when Melissa was over last month for our yearly scrapbook day. Yes, I said "yearly." How pathetic that we can only manage to get together one time a year to scrapbook together. Maybe this year we will be able to double it.

I was less than halfway through this layout when Melissa had to depart and leave me staring and wondering what to do next. I am pretty pleased with the outcome. I used the cool chipboard letters again and I cut out some of the leaf design on the background paper to overlap the enlarged photo. Kinda cool.

Vacation May 2007

This layout was hard for me to complete, or even start, because of the different colors in the photos. Most of the colors are similar except for the three with the bike trailer---the red really threw me off. I tried to add little bits of red throughout the entire layout to try to make the red "work" but I don't know if I actually pulled it off. I do like the two larger pics of Jonas and Tony on the left side and I think that part turned out nice with the matting and the rub-on definitions. I also like the chipboard letters for 'vacation'. I bought those on clearance at Wal*Mart dirt cheap which makes them even better.

I love these photos that DeAnne took of Jonas and Big Uncle hunting Easter eggs a couple years ago. I already did a layout with other photos from this day but I knew I had to do something special with these. Big Uncle is going to love this layout.

More leftover photos put to good use. I love going through the photos of Jonas as a tiny baby. He seems like a giant now compared to all these photos.

NOTE: Apologies to Frank for inadvertently shaving off most of your head....I got a little carried away when I was editing this layout on the computer. Oopsie. Hope it didn't hurt too much. =)

Wow, look at me go with following through (at least a little bit) on my plan to use up those leftover photos. I love any layout that I can get 22 photos on. Although I don't know if this is technically a layout since there are no embellishments or other fanciness. Perhaps this is just a collage but hey, who cares, it's done.

Favorites in this group: Tony feeding Jonas his first rice cereal (top left). He really has that deer-in-the-headlights look but he actually really liked it and we couldn't get it in his mouth fast enough. Also love the one of Jonas in the backpack with Tony (bottom left). Jonas' cheeks look super plump and squeezable.

Leftovers. Piles of leftover photos is an ongoing problem with scrapbooking, at least for me. I sometimes get a little crazy with printing loads of photos to make sure I have enough to work with for page layouts but of course I always have some leftovers. Most are good photos and some are super-funny or cute but just didn't make the cut for whatever the layout was about. So finally, I've come up with a system to use up at least some of them. I plan to do one album with only this kind of layout of wall-to-wall photos taken throughout the year. I'm working on 2005 right now and it's funny to see Jonas looking so small and round. He never really seemed chubby to me but looking back at the photos from 6 months to 18 months his head and face are a perfect circle.

I like how this collage turned out. I'm especially glad that I was able to show his two major wounds; January split forehead open (top left) and October split cheek open (far right, middle.) The October pic is especially nice showing the huge puffy black eye Jonas had the next day at church after splitting his cheek open the night before.

I've finally made it back to my scrapbook pages after long neglect. The last few months I've gotten sidetracked with another crafty-obsession and haven't gotten anything done on Jonas' scrapbook so I am now more than a year behind. (The new crafty-obsession is gift related so I won't elaborate until after I've given them.) Oh well. Still fun even if I'm perpetually behind.

I am somewhat proud of myself that this page was created without a special trip to the scrapbook store for supplies. I actually managed to create this out of the impossibly large stash of supplies that I've been accumulating over the last several years. Other scrapbook-aholics will nod along in agreement when I say that sometimes I buy stuff that I think is so cool (or is potentially so cool) and I have a hard time using it because I don't want to "waste" it. Case-in-point: the library card with journaling on it in this layout is actually older than Jonas is. Sad, but true. But today I had the courage to use the cool library card and I think it was the perfect addition to this somewhat simple page.

Yet another digital layout. I really love these photos. You may recognize them from a previous post last August, More Cool Headgear. I really didn't like what was going on in the background of the original photos and had the idea to cut it out and then proceed from there. I think it came out kinda cool.
